I would call this the ultimate festival of Gujarat. Apart from the kites that is known to all, there is music, Lights, Crackers, food, and Dance.
Every year on the 14th & 15th of January you will see Gujarat celebrating this one crazy Kite festival with complete madness and enthusiasm. The 15th of January known as the Vaasi- Uttarayan has the same anticipation as on the 14th. The two days you see people at their terraces with the Kites, Music system at the loudest, dances moves at the best, food the most delicious, lamps and crackers all lightening up the sky in the evening.
Vadodara is known to celebrate all the festivals with huge festivity spirit. If you haven’t see the madness, catch it once in your life for sure.
The food is another icing on the sugar. Undhiyu, Jalebi, Chiki are the most wanted dishes of Uttarayan.
Undhiyu is traditional Gujarati style mixed vegetable curry made using winter vegetables and peanuts-sesame-coconut gravy.
Jalebi is a melt-in-the-mouth Indian sweet and can best be described as funnel cakes.
Peanut Chiki is a yummy peanut brittle made with jaggery. It is a perfect snack to gorge on in winters to keep your body warm.
Til Chikki (Sesame Brittle) is made of Sesame seeds, jaggery and ghee, again very good in winters and made in almost every house of Gujarat during Uttarayan.
I also visited the International of Kite Festival in Vadodara and here are some glimpses of it.
I was in Gujarat for this festival several years ago. It was an experience I will never forget.
Thank you for choosing to follow my blog, and for bringing me here.

You should visit Jaipur too on 14 th January. it’s celebrated with huge following… people stick to terrace for whole day, flying kites. In evening lanterns and fireworks follow! It’s being followed since times immemorial.. Maharaja ram Singh II was a patronized kite festival
