Why Maggi!!

I remember taking a five rupee coin from Mummy and walking to a shop we lived near by and getting a Maggi back for myself, some good 20 years ago.

This year  in May, while I was on a 10 days Himalayan trekking trip, I had the most of Maggi. You know what happiness it gives in that chilling weather in the mountains. I cannot forget the summit day, the most difficult day of the trek, I started my day at around 3 am in the morning with my 50 other trek mates  and guides without eating almost anything. I wanted to but could not, probably was a bit excited and nervous too as the weather that day looked difficult for us. Snow, storm, rains, heavy winds, the weather gods just planned to put some adventure for us. We reached pass, at 12000 ft and anywhere we turned we saw only snow. To add more it kept on snowing with heavy winds. My gloves completely became wet and I could not continue using it, so I had to remove it. I felt nothing in my hands. I could not walk as I had no energy without food. My stamina had called off and I kept falling every 10 minutes. Thanks to my wonderful trek mates who lifted me up every time I slipped. They also helped me by offering anything to eat like chocolates and dates, but I only wanted to come out of the snow. No more snow please!!

With the Sherpa on the Summit day

We kept walking and walking, finally at around 12:00 noon, when we crossed the pass, saw the small youth hostel canteen offering tea and snacks for the trekkers. You don’t get anything else at these heights except eggs, biscuits, chocolates or maggi. I threw my backpack, sat there for half an hour and enjoyed my maggi.

The below pictures are at the height of 8000 ft two days before our summit day. I just could not think of taking pictures on summit day.

On returning from my Vacation, I had no idea about the Maggi ban controversy. Over the next few days and months, we all know what happened and how quickly it vanished from all stores.

After 6 months of no maggi, this month finally its back on the stores. You know what it means!!

Never heard of the Maggi controversy here in Australia. Have to admit I’m not a fan 😦 Quick and easy to fix, I know, and lightweight for travel. My kids eat them sometimes.

Was it banned because of some food scare? Or safety reasons?
